Quantitative survey of injecting drug users for the R21 study on the feasibility of pharmacy-delivered HIV prevention services in Ha Giang, Vietnam

Year: 2011

Funded by: Abt Associates

As part of the R21 Project implemented by Abt Associates, ISMS carried out a cross-sectional survey of 167 injecting drug users (IDUS) and 36 pharmacy owners in Ha Giang province. IDUS were selected using respondent driven sampling. The overall aim was to assess the feasibility of using pharmacies as outlets for HIV-related services directed at IDUS in Vietnam in order to inform the possible preparation for a multi- site randomized community controlled intervention trial. Topics that were explored included IDUs' drug use practices, syringe acquisition, sexual behaviors, service utilization, knowledge and attitudes toward HIVIAIDS, and the impact of law enforcement. Pharmacists were questioned about their knowledge, attitudes and practices related to the provision of HIV-related services for IDUs.
